The exposition is when Brian gets in a plane crashin the book Hatchet. This is also by Gary paulsen. Brian's parents are divorced. One lives in The United States of America, and one lives in Canada. One day, Brians parents let him fly over to Canada by himself in a jet. While the plane was flying in the air, the pilot had a heart attack and died. Brian does what he can to try to keep the plane in the air, but it's no use. Even though he was just 13 so he knew nothing about plane, he somehow landed the plane in an opening next to a river. At the end of Hatchet, Brian gets saved and lives happily ever after. Gary Paulsen decided to write Brian's Winter, to tell what would happen if Brian haddent been saved.
Next, is the rising action. Now, Brian has been stuck in the forest for exactly fourty-four days. Summer is gone and Fall is coming. The climate is changing. He must now figure out a way to survive the harsh Canadian Winter. In the survival pack that he got from the plane was a sleeping bag, a Hatchet, a hunting knife, some water, first aid kit,and a .22 rifle. I found it ironic that every book that i have read for a project involves guns. I didn't know until I actually pick the books up and read them. All the bullets have seemed to have run out for the rifle. He can no longer just shoot rabits, deers, a birds for food. The boy must get food with his bare hands or find another way to get some food. He quickly realizes that he must think how the native Americans Did.
He thinks to himself how the native Americans made there life work. how they were able to survive. A few minutes later, it finally pops into his head. Bow & Arrows. he needs a bow and arrows to hunt and find food. But, before he can go out to look for fire wood. there is rain. But it was a light rain...That lasted 6 days non-stop. Brian has to wait an extra day ontop of that so the wood can have a chance to dry. While he is taking a break from making the bow and arrows, he focuses on building a shelter.
The climax is when he is attacked by a bear. The bear comes and is about to kill him with a powerfull strike tot he heead. But right before the bear striked, a skunk came out of now were and sprayes the bear in the eyes. Both the bear and Brian were shocked about what had just happened. They both thought this was the end of Brian. Brian and the skunk were "friends" . He would always give the skunk something to eat. The skunk was just saving his main food supply.
The falling action is when Brian finally is starting to get used to the woods. He now has a shetler, food and clothes. He's getting used to the forest life. I am sure that he misses his family and friends. Brian also must miss not have to go hunting everyday just to go get some food. The boy has learned to except that he is going to be in the Canadian wood for a long time. Possibly the rest of his life.
